Carmelo has a few options. While I’ll be very disappointed, and angry, if he goes somewhere other than New York, I will understand why if he goes to some of these other destinations. In Chicago, he gets to stay in the Eastern Conference, gets to play in a big market, and has a very solid team with a great coach and players who can do the dirty work on defense while he focuses on scoring. If Rose is healthy, that’s a very, very dangerous team. In Houston, he gets to play with two other stars, including a franchise center, and another solid player in Chandler Parsons. He also gets to play in a decent market with no income tax. Who knows, maybe they could add another star going forward. In Miami or Phoenix, if he can find a way to play with LeBron, that’s obviously very appealing. And in New York, he gets his money, he gets his huge market, he gets Phil, he gets to stay where he is with his family, he gets a chance to be immortal as I said yesterday, and if the Knicks can make major moves next offseason, things could work out very well for him here in NYC.
But Los Angeles? Sorry, Melo, but I don’t understand that. Sure, they have Kobe. But at this point, Kobe is a question mark, and he’s aging, and he’s taking up a ton of cap space. He also is a shoot-first player, which obviously clashes with your style of play. The Lakers play in the West, which makes it harder to win. And if you do win? Well, then you’re just bringing a 17th title and you’re going to get thrown into the crowd under the shadows of Kobe, Shaq, Kareem, Wilt, West, Magic, and the list goes on. The Lakers have Hollywood. The Lakers have a history (although, to be fair, Phil played a large part in the Kobe chapter of their history). The Lakers can give you a nice contract. But I think the Lakers make very little sense for Melo. I would be very confused if Anthony signs with the Lakers. We’ll know soon where Melo is gonna be playing this coming season, and I hope it’s New York.
